Individual Behavior

Although I feel all of the "Big Five" personality traits are important characteristics to be instilled in a manager, I believe that conscientiousness should be the most prominent. It would seem logical that a manager acquires dependable, organized, and task focused characteristics, however that is not always the case. Many of times I have had managers who were the complete opposite of conscientious and were totally inconscientious. For instance, how I discussed in my previous blog, I had worked in a resturant that was poorly managed. My manager at one period of time was gifted with all inconscientious qualities - careless, impulsive, and not achievement oriented. When the resturant would get very busy and hectic, employees would not be able to rely on her to fix the issue at the time. This would lead to further disorganized and careless behavior from the employee end, due to her not being achievement oriented and assisting the staff at time of need.

Being able to depend on a higher authority especiality in the resturant business is very essential. Employees are often not allowed to preform tasks on their own. For instance, changing or editing and order often requires management approval. If the manager is careless, this will eventually impact customer service, and portray the server as being inefficient. In conclusion, unlike the remaning "Big Five" personality traits, which contain more positive qualities on both sides of the spectrum, inconscientious qualities are rarely positive in an individual; especially in a leadership role.

  1. I can't believe someone who is not achievement oriented was even a manager of a company. i think that is a key quality to running a business otherwise it will be chaos and probably not successful while they are running it

  2. I also chose conscientiousness as the most important personality trait for all managers. Managers who are not dependable and organized should not be in that position from the beginning. Disorganization at any work places can be the worst thing for everyone who works for the place. Getting things done is the primary goal of any types of work.

  3. I choose agreeableness as the most important personality trait however i was debating between conscientiousness as well. I feel like its very important to have a manager with a conscientious trait because it would make everyones life easier, and things would be done successfully in a timely manner.

  4. I think "conscientiousness" is the most important traits for being a manager as well. When a manger is not organized and not focusing on tasks, it definitely would bring difficulties to employees and the business.

  5. I used to work in a fast food restaurant and I understand how lazy and ineffective managers can drastically affect overall performance. There are few things for frustrating, in a professional sense, than a manager who is not achievement focused. In the food industry especially, it is vital for a manager to exude a calm leadership-based mentality so that he or she can lead by example. If he or she participates in serving or administrative duties during the busiest times of day, it galvanizes the staff and brings a better working environment that is easier to manage.
